20 / Judgement

Mastery of Intent
Planet Saturn

The Judgement card is about the ultimate truth beyond all the illusions of life. The Judgement card follows the Sun card. The Sun is the light of spirit that shines through each individual, reminding us that we are expressions of the divine. The Judgement card follows, showing us that no matter where we go or what we do with that light, the truth of our divine nature remains constant. Many versions of the Judgement card show an image from the Book of Revelations, when the dead rise from their graves to the angel's trumpet. The Judgement card is a card of revelation. It is about awakening to the truth, and seeing that your whole life has been an expression of truth. The Judgement card is where everything comes full circle.

In Vedic astrology, the Judgement card corresponds with the planet Saturn. Saturn is the outermost of the visible planets. In ancient astrology, Saturn is the planet of death and deep truth. In many ways Saturn is the opposite of the Sun, which the Sun card represents. The Sun is large and hot and shines from the center of our star system. Saturn is relatively small, cold and cycles around the outer edges of our system. Saturn shows what happens to the light of the Sun as it travels further from its source, becoming dark and cold. Saturn is connected with the celestial orb of fixed stars. The Sun is a star too, and so the Sun and Saturn are both reflections of the same truth. In Vedic mythology, both the god Shiva and the goddess Kali represent the infinity of time. Shiva is related to the Sun and is the eternity of the present moment, the infinite now. Kali is related to Saturn and is the eternity of all of time, an infinite string of moments that goes on forever. One is vertical and masculine, the other is horizontal and feminine. Both are different aspects of the same eternal truth.

In Toltec cosmology, this is the final card of the six cards relating to the mastery of intent. The initiation triad of Devil, Tower and Star showed us how to allow intent to move through us. The integration triad of Moon, Sun and Judgement shows us how to live our intent. In some ways, the mastery of intent is the easiest of the three. In truth, we are always living out our intent. We cannot escape intent. The mastery of intent is ultimately about surrendering to the truth of who you are, and the truth of spirit that moves through you.

The Judgement card is about the finality of time. It shows us the underlying truth of our lives that is inescapable. It reminds us that the truth does not change, though the outer world of illusion may be in a constant state of shifting appearances. Pull the Judgement card from your favorite tarot deck and place it somewhere you will see it. Invite the energy of the Judgement card into your life, and see what happens.
