19 / The Sun

Mastery of Intent
The Sun

The Sun in the tarot is a card of inner joy and spirit. The Sun is a card of expressing and embodying the pure joy inherent in existence. It follows from the Moon card. Once we receive the energy of spirit, surrendering to it and feeling it deeply, than we can shine that energy for all to see. We become beacons for the light of spirit, trusting that we are one with our source. The Sun card is about the celebration of the self, but it is the self that is a direct expression of the divine. It is the place where we realize we can be self-actualized individuals and still be in deep surrender to the divine mystery. Remember the Devil card is a mountain, the Tower card is a volcano blasting through, and the Star card is the empty channel created by that catharsis. The Moon card is the celestial water that flows through that channel, and the Sun is the fountain from which those cosmic waters flow. With the Sun card, we trace the mysterious waters of the Moon card back to their source, finding that source within us.

The Sun in Vedic astrology represents the source of the light of consciousness. The Sun was worshipped by the ancient Vedas as the origin of our vitality. The Sun provides light and heat for all life on Earth. Symbolically, the Sun is the place where all things are one. It is like a dimensionless point that holds all potential within it. It is the divine spark that sets everything in motion. The Moon card represents the sign of Pisces, a water sign ruled by the giant gas planet, Jupiter. In Arthur C. Clark's science fiction epic, Jupiter is in fact a proto-star which reaches critical mass, imploding to create a binary star system. When we move from the Moon card to the Sun card, we move from the expansive gaseous dream of Jupiter into the ignition of consciousness that occurs in the Sun. Once we surrender to the universal mystery we gain the power and presence of that mystery.

In Toltec shamanism, we are nearing the completion of the mastery of intent, the last of three masteries outlined by don Miguel Ruiz. In the mastery of intent, we awaken to our true nature as divine beings. We surrender ourselves to that true nature, gaining the power of infinite intent. The truth is that we are made of light, and all light is united with itself in spirit. With the Sun card, we understand that we are made of pure intent. There is no way we could be anything other than pure spirit.

The Sun is very important in Toltec cosmology. Don Miguel describes our relationship to the Sun like the relationship between organs of reproduction and the hypothalamus in the human body. When we are ready for change, we send signals to the Sun. The Sun in turn changes the frequency of light it is emitting, evoking more change among humans. We have recently entered a time when the Sun has dramatically shifted its energy, sending a message to humans to begin dreaming a different dream of life on Earth. The Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacán is the largest pyramid in the sacred complex, and it is the site of a Toltec ritual which helps participants realize their own divinity. As conduits of energy between the Earth and the Sun, we are like gods, co-creating life with the source.

In Toltec shamanism, everything is divided into two worlds, the tonal and the nagual. The tonal is the realm of the known. It is everything we experience with our senses, including all of our ideas, thoughts, and emotions. The nagual is the realm of the unknowable. It is pure potential and mystery. Toltec shamanism aims at gaining access to the realm of the nagual, allowing for more freedom in the expression of the tonal. This is what the mastery of intent is truly about. It is about realizing that there is an infinite source of pure energy to which we always have access. We have been trained in this life to filter out this infinite unruly energy, creating channels for it. As we evolve, these channels that helped us cope with the raw miracle of life become obstacles to our expression. In the mastery of awareness, you become aware of all of your filters that limits your access to the nagual. In the mastery of transformation, you let go of your ego and allow your filters to wither and fade. In the mastery of intent, you let the pure love and light of spirit shine through you. You become like the Sun, shining bright.

Find the Sun card in your favorite tarot deck. Put it some place you will see it often. Commit to embracing yourself entirely, allowing yourself to be an expression of the pure joy of spirit. Realize that you are not separate from your divine source. You are one with everything, and everything gets expressed through you.
