The Star card in the tarot shows how we can consciously restructure our experience. It is like a fresh breath of air or the first light of a new dawn. It is like the quiet peace after the cataclysm that is the Tower card. The Star is that moment of waking up to the dream of life. It shows the evolution of consciousness that occurs when you realize that you are co-creating this experience. The image on the card is usually a woman with one foot on dry land and one foot in the water. This image is symbolic of our human nature. We are individual egos, but we are also an inseperable part of something much greater, the infinite light of divine consciousness.
In Vedic astrology, the Star card corresponds with the zodiac sign of Aquarius. Aquarius is a fixed air sign ruled by the planet Saturn. Saturn is the planet of structure and limitation, but Aquarius represents Saturn's expansive, wacky side. Aquarius experiments with the rules of life to create freaky new possibilities. Aquarius is about evolution and revolution. The Tower card shattered the Devil's pattern of old intent into many pieces. The Star card takes those many pieces and finds new ways to fit them together, rearranging them into a whole new dream. The sign of Aquarius often struggles with the seeming paradox between the self and the collective consciousnesses. The symbol for Aquarius the water bearer is a pitcher or vessel for water, and also a human. The human being is a vessel for divine light. The divine light of consciousness flows within us, connecting us with something greater than our limited perception.
In the cosmology of Toltec shamanism, we are in the mastery of intent. The first three cards of this mastery show an initiation into intent. The Devil card is like a solid heavy mountain that represents the gravity and intensity of our structure. The Tower card is the volcano that blasts pure energy through the core of the mountain, creating catharsis. The Star card represents that hollow glass chamber in the center of the mountain, once the Tower energy has blasted through. The Star card is the ability to acknowledge the structure of our ego perception, while at the same time allowing an empty space through which to channel the deeper intent of spirit. The heavy mountain of our habitual way of perceiving does not go away. But with the Star card a space is made within that mountain for pure spirit to flow.
Use the Star card to welcome the deeper intent of spirit into your life. Allow yourself to have a hollow space within where spirit can flow freely, unfettered by the limitations of your ego self. Learn to accept the mountain of your ego without being limited by it. Realize that you have the freedom to play with the apparent rules of life. Challenge yourself to bend and warp the rules. The Star card refreshes your intent and allows for new intent to come in. Sometimes this new intent can feel uncomfortable at first, like a new pair of shoes, even if it is something that will ultimately feel better to you.
Find the Star card in the tarot deck of your choice. Place it somewhere you will see it often. Meditate on the Star card and invite the energy of the Star into all areas of your life. Open to the light of the new dawn. The light of dawn can be jarring at first after a long dark night. Celebrate the light, even if it feels awkward.
