The Wheel of Fortune card is about being in your center, the place where all opportunities and all abundance originates. The card depicts creatures suspended on different parts of a wheel. The image reminds us of all the ups and downs of life and the various seasons we all experience. The wheel of life is always spinning, and the only thing we know for sure is that what we experience now will eventually change into something else. The lesson of the Fortune card is about the importance of staying in your center during change. It is the center or the hub of the wheel that remains constant. If your attention is on the rim of the wheel, your attitude about life will depend on outer circumstances. You will feel happy when fortunate things happen, and you will feel depressed or angry when unfortunate things happen. If your attention is on the center of the wheel, however, your attitude and intent for your life is independent of external events.
In Vedic astrology, the Fortune card corresponds with the planet Jupiter. Jupiter is the great benefic or guru planet. It is the teacher or guide that shows us that all abundance and creativity comes from our connection to our own spiritual source, the center of our greater being. In our energetic body, Jupiter is the sex chakra, showing a deep connection between spirituality and sexuality. This center is also called the tan tien in Chinese mysticism or the hara in Japanese tradition. It is the center of gravity for our body, and it is the seat of a deeper intelligence and more expansive consciousness than our ego minds. In Toltec shamanism, the umbilical region is the seat of power, the place where the energy of the nagual (unmanifest) enters into the world of the tonal (manifest).
In Toltec shamanism, we are still in the mastery of transformation. The Fortune card shows the place where transformation becomes possible. By remaining in your center during change, you become aware of opportunities that are missed when you are stuck on the rim. If you are hooked by outer events and something unfortunate happens one day, your upset reaction may prevent you from seeing an opportunity when it comes along on the following day. Jupiter and the Fortune card connect with the Toltec concept of the Big Soul. While our ego selves have a limited perspective, our Big Souls are our larger selves that have a greater vision of what is possible for us. The Big Soul is expansive and accepting. If we are attached to outcome, we contract and lose the larger view of the Big Soul.
Find the Fortune card and place it somewhere you will see it. Meditate on the lesson of the Fortune card. Know that all wealth, wisdom, abundance and creativity in your life comes from your connection to your own divine center. Know that all change flows from the intent of your center. Imagine shifting your attention from the ego fixation on the rim of the wheel to the broader, more expansive view of the Big Soul.
